A Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) is a portable electronic transmitter designed for individuals to signal rescuers in the event of a life-threatening man overboard (MOB) situation requiring immediate rescue. Once activated, the PLB emits a distress signal on either the 406MHz frequency or the Local Area System, utilizing 121.5MHz, VHF DSC, and/or AIS technologies.
406MHz devices, like EPIRBs and ELTs, were traditionally standalone solutions for platforms such as aircraft, vessels, or platforms. However, they are now employed on individuals.
Activation Process
- Signal Transmission: Once activated, the signal is transmitted at 406MHz.
- Satellite Detection: The signal is detected by satellites in orbit.
- Mission Control Centre (MCC): The signal is sent to the Mission Control Centre.
- Decoding and Forwarding: At the MCC, the signal is decoded and forwarded to the nearest Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC).
- Upon Verification (which can take up to 60 minutes):
- Dispatch: The closest Search and Rescue forces are dispatched to the location.
Local Area Systems
PLB’s operating on Local Area Systems use a combination of; 121.5MHz radio direction finding tone, VHF DSC distress alert (Mayday) on channels 70 & 16 and AIS GPS tracking, to alert the nearest vessel and provide updated location & tracking details to within +/- 1m.
